What is Chiropractic care?

A safe, gentle and effective way of relieving pain by focusing on the relationship between the alignment of the joints in your spine, the function of your nervous system, and the impact that it has on your health. Chiropractic care is the largest natural health care system in the world, which is a very good indication of the positive impact that it has on countless lives.

Chiropractic care is based on the scientific knowledge that tension, misalignment or altered function of your spine can interfere with the flow of information along your nerves, which may dramatically affect the function of your body in a multitude of ways.

Doctors of Chiropractic focus on improving the function of your spine, which helps to improve the flow of information throughout your nervous system. This can help to stimulate nerve activity so that your body can better coordinate its functions, and adapt to stress. Through Chiropractic care, many people naturally find relief from aches, pains and the symptoms associated with a of a range of different and sometimes complex health conditions. Patients also report the added benefit of improved mobility, bio-mechanical and nervous system function.

How do I know if I would benefit from seeing a Chiropractor?

It is recommended that everyone have their spine and nervous system checked regularly by a qualified and highly experienced Chiropractor. Only 10% of your nervous system perceives pain, the other 90% is responsible for making your body function. It’s possible to have interference to your nervous system and feel no pain, which means that an absence of pain does equate to good health.

If pain is present, especially in the back, neck, shoulders or hips, this may indicate that misalignment is present in the spine and should be assessed by an experienced Chiropractor.

What is spinal misalignment?

Abnormal motion, with or without misalignment of a spinal bone is commonly called facet joint dysfunction or vertebral subluxation. Misalignments in your spine can become the silent destroyers of your health, because of the pressure they places on your delicate spinal joints and nerves. The weight of a 5 cent piece is enough pressure to shut down a spinal nerve by 40-60%.

**It is important to understand that Chiropractic care does not seek to “treat” health conditions – your body does that. Chiropractors are experts at detecting and correcting spinal misalignments, facet joint dysfunction and skeletal or smooth muscle spasm. Chiropractors seek to restore normal biomechanical and neurological function.**

What causes spinal misalignment?

Physical trauma such as motor accidents, falls or injuries. Repetitive traumas such as sitting for long periods, poor sleeping posture, incorrect lifting, or poor posture (laptop and devise use) can also cause spinal misalignment. Chemical stresses such as poor diet, certain medications, alcohol, caffeine and pollution are also causative factors; as is sustained emotional stress.

Reasons people seek out Chiropractic care

Wellness Care

Chiropractic is the largest natural health care profession in the Western world. By correcting misalignments in your spine, Chiropractic care helps your spine and joints to move more freely, while removing noxious input from your nervous system. A nervous system free of interference can help to restore a state of health (homeostasis) to your body.

Reasons people seek out Chiropractic care:

  • To improve flexibility, strength and muscle coordination
  • To improve their ability to relax and cope with stress and change
  • To improve posture
  • To reduce their risk of spinal degeneration and decay

Pregnancy Support

Research shows that Chiropractic care helps to relieve back pain for up to 85% of pregnant women. By correcting misalignments of your lumbar spine and pelvis, Chiropractic care can help your body adapt to the changing pressures of pregnancy. Keeping your spine and pelvis aligned during the last trimester, not only reduces pain in your upper and lower back, but can often lead to an easier transition to motherhood.

Reasons pregnant and new Mum’s seek out Chiropractic care:

  • Spinal and pelvic discomfort, tension or instability
  • Pubic symphysis, sacroiliac joint pain or inflammation
  • Labour preparation
  • Postural pain as result of breastfeeding positions or carrying a growing child
  • Increase one’s ability to exercise comfortably

Children’s Health Support

While a child’s spine and body is incredibly flexible and mobile, even minor knocks, falls or postural stresses can impact the function of their spinal joints or nervous system. The nervous system controls everything your child does, from breathing and digesting, to running and thinking. There can be early warning signs that your child’s spine may not be functioning at its best, for example favouring one side of their neck, poor posture and limited joint movement or pain.

Reasons parents seek out Chiropractic care for their Children:

  • Torticollis / head tilt
  • Misshapen head
  • Scoliosis detection and management
  • Lack of balance or coordination
  • Pigeon toed or duck footed gait
  • Frequent falls, jolts or sporting mishaps
  • Complaints of neck or back pain
  • Postural issues

Sports Performance Care

Chiropractic care has been shown to enhance co-ordination, speed and overall performance. It can also help your body to be more mobile, flexible and help to keep your muscles in peak condition. Research has shown that regular Chiropractic care can improve athletic ability and performance and also reduce the risk of injury. Studies have shown dramatic decrease in response times of athletes under Chiropractic care with one study showing a 30% decrease in hand reaction time.

Reasons Sportspeople seek out Chiropractic care:

  • Injury management
  • Injury prevention
  • Natural performance enhancement / biomechanical analysis
  • Back related hamstring injuries
  • Frequent groin, hamstring, calf muscle strains
  • Nagging injuries that don’t seem to heal
  • Recurrent shoulder, elbow or foot pain
